The Strada Statale 48 delle Dolomiti or Great Dolomites Road (abbreviation: SS 48 ) is an Italian state road in northern Italy that leads from Auer via Cortina d'Ampezzo to Lozzo di Cadore . It is located in the Italian regions of Veneto and Trentino-South Tyrol and has a total length of 182.100 km.

Since 1998, the responsibility of ANAS has been transferred to the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento, the section in Veneto has been under the administration of the region since 2001 as SR 48 .

Route

The route begins in Auer in South Tyrol and climbs rapidly towards the east over serpentines and reaches Trentino at the San Lugano saddle and then the first town of Cavalese .

The route through the Fiemme Valley (Val di Fiemme) leads north to Predazzo , where it crosses the SS 50 . The next place is Moena at the beginning of the Fassa Valley (Val di Fassa) . The famous rose garden is located above the valley . At Canazei the SS 242 comes down from the Sella Pass in the south and the SS 48 leads steeply with many serpentines to the Pordoi Pass at 2239 m. There is also the border between Trentino and Veneto .

Then it goes down on boldly laid out roads through the Livinallongotal, first slightly southwards and then northwards on the Falzarego pass at 2105 m. The first place to be reached is Cortina d'Ampezzo , the well-known tourist destination. The SS 51 crosses the SS 48 near Cortina in the Valle del Boite .

The SS 48 continues eastwards and you reach another pass, namely the Passo Tre Croci at 1805 m. Back in the valley the road forks:

The route then leads south again and meets the SS 52 . Shortly afterwards it reaches its end point at Lozzo di Cadore at km 182.

Tourism and nature

The road is important for tourism as it includes numerous alpine passes with spectacular roads with alpine serpentines and steep inclines. The road also offers fascinating views of the highest peaks in the Dolomites such as the Rosengarten, the Marmolada and the Marmarole group. Furthermore, there is a good chance of seeing high mountain animals from the road. The road offers views of torrents, deep gorges, valleys and also high mountains, as the highest passes are at over 2000 meters.

The road represents an important link between the Alpine valleys and important tourist functions.

The road is part of the Great Tour of the Dolomites .
