The Straight River is a 37 km long tributary of the Fish Hook River in Hubbard County in northern Minnesota in the United States . About the Fish Hook River, the Shell River and the Crow Wing River it is part of the catchment area of the Mississippi River and drains an area of about 155 km² in a rural area. The river is said to be one of the best trout waters in Minnesota.

The river name has its origins in a translation of the name for the Straight Lake in the Ojibwa language , through which the river flows near its source.

geography

The Straight River rises in the White Earth Indian Reservation within the Two Inlets State Forest, about 10 km northeast of Pine Point in the Pine Point Township in the northwest of Becker County . It initially flows southwest through Straight Lake and then in an east-southeast direction to southwest Hubbard County . It flows into the Fish Hook River in Hubbard Townshipm about 6 km south of Park Rapids . The river runs in the ecoregion of northern lakes and forests, which is characterized by coniferous plants and hardwood vegetation . The landscape is flat and is formed by slightly undulating ground moraines and sand .

The Straight River rises from a spring whose water is cold enough to support an abundant trout population and is known among anglers for catching brown trout that are over 50 cm in length. A larger population of brook trout used to live in the river, but this has declined due to rising water temperatures. In the early 1990s, various organizations sued the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to enforce greater protection for the Straight River. The agency has since begun counteracting water abstraction to irrigate agriculture, which is negatively affecting the river's cold springs.

Flow rate

The United States Geological Survey operates a gauge in the Straight River Township . There the long-term average amount of water running off is 1.72 m³ / s. The highest value was 4.22 m³ / s on April 6, 1997 and the lowest value recorded was 0.59 m³ / s on November 23, 2003.
