Strei ( German  Zeikdorf , Hungarian Zeykfalva ) is a place in Transylvania and belongs to the city of Călan in the Hunedoara district , Romania .

The place is also known by the outdated Romanian names Streiu and Streia and the Hungarian Zejkfalva .

The small town is located in the Hatzeger valley basin ( Depresiunea Hațeg ) on the Strei ( Strell ) - a left tributary of the Mureș ( Mieresch ) - about 3 kilometers south of Călan. At the Europastraße 79 , the place is about 25 kilometers southeast of the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ).

history

When the place was founded by the Romanian Knesen family Zeyk , Strei was first mentioned in 1377. Because of their loyal service to the king, the Zeyk family - who later converted to the reformed faith - were enfeoffed with several estates and thus rose to the Hungarian nobility. The Hungarian name of the place Zeykfalva comes from its founder Zeyk-Zaicu .

According to J. Ackner (1856), JF Neigebauer , C. Gooss u. a. back to Roman times . During archaeological excavations, the remains of corresponding dwellings were found.

population

In 1850, 204 inhabitants lived in the area of ​​today's town. 195 were Romanians and nine were Hungarians . In 1920 the largest population was determined with 445 - also that of the Romanians (431). The highest number of Hungarians (111) was registered in 1910 and that of Germans (8) in 1900. At the 2002 census, 384 people lived in the village, 379 of them Romanians, four Hungarians and one German. In addition, in 1890 one resident referred to himself as a Slovak .

Attractions

  • The Romanesque stone church Adormirea Maicii Domnului was built in the second half of the 13th century. With partly well-preserved interior frescoes , the church is one of the most important Romanian architectural monuments of the 13th century due to its simple architectural style and the special features of its Byzantine painting . The originally Roman Catholic church was later used by Calvinists and Orthodox . The church tower with a few twin windows was bricked up to the top of the roof. The building material for the church comes from the Sarmizegetusa castle . On the altar wall there is a self-portrait and the painter's signature. The church is a listed building.
  • The remains of a Roman villa on the church grounds are under monument protection.
