String Quintet (Schubert)
The string quintet in C major op. Post 163, D 956 , is a late chamber music work by Franz Schubert in four movements . It has the unusual for the genus occupation two violins - viola - two cellos . The string quintet was probably composed in September 1828, two months before Schubert's death. It was no longer performed during his lifetime and was not printed until 1853. The autograph is considered lost.
construction
- Allegro ma non troppo
- adagio
- Scherzo. Presto trio. Andante sostenuto
- Allegretto
Similar to other late works by Schubert, such as his Great C major symphony and the last of his piano sonatas D 958, D 959 and D 960 (-> Piano Sonatas No. 19 to 21 (Schubert) ), the first movement is extraordinarily long . He uses the sonata form and takes more than a third of the playing time of the entire composition (~ 50 minutes).
The second movement, which is a three-part song form A - B - A, has achieved particular fame . The beginning and the end part in E major are of a great calm and stand in stark contrast to the stormy, turbulent middle part in F minor. This sentence, with its elegiac character, is used as background music in some films . Examples are the Schubert biography With My Hot Tears , Where to and Back ( Axel Corti ), The Wannsee Conference , The Human Blemish and The Limits of Control .
The lively Scherzo initially returns to C major, until it is followed by a thoughtful, elegiac trio that is difficult to pin down in terms of key . The final movement is a fiery rondo with clear influences from Hungarian dance music.
Quote
Joachim Kaiser says of the work: “Before Franz Schubert's string quintet in C major, all people to whom music, chamber music even mean something, bow happily in admiration - or rave about it. The work occupies a singular place in Schubert's oeuvre, even in music literature. It is enigmatic, and it is completed ... No one can use words to completely unravel the sounding mystery of this work or to bring it to terms. "
