Student Union in Freiburg

The Studierendenwerk Freiburg (SWFR) fulfills the statutory task of looking after and promoting the around 44,000 students in the Freiburg university region . It is a member of the German Student Union and is currently the second largest student union in Baden-Württemberg.

The Studierendenwerk is an institution under public law with around 350 employees. It currently runs 10 canteens , 7 cafeterias and the Haus zur Lieben Hand restaurant . It rents 17 student residences to students and is involved in the implementation of BAföG .

It operates a service portal that helps students find student jobs, especially babysitters, and find private accommodation.

Supervised universities

The Studierendenwerk looks after students at the following universities:

tasks

The tasks of the student unions in Baden-Württemberg are regulated in § 2 of the Student Union Act. In particular, the following areas, facilities and measures can be used to perform tasks:

  • gastronomy
  • Student living
  • Promotion of cultural, sporting and social interests
  • childcare
  • Health promotion and counseling
  • social support for foreign students
  • Arranging financial aid to study.

organs

The Studierendenwerk is represented by three bodies:

  • The managing director Clemens Metz runs the business and is the superior of the employees.
  • The board of directors consists of three representatives of the management of universities, three representatives of the university students, three external experts from the economy or the city administration and one representative of the Ministry of Science. The board of directors appoints, monitors and advises the managing director.
  • The representative assembly includes the rectorate or board members of the universities. It resolves the statutes of the student union and elects the members of the administrative board.

MensaCard

In the student union facilities, most of the payments are made cashless with a chip card . The so-called MensaCard is issued to all enrolled students. It serves as a student ID and will also be used in the institutions of the universities for access authorization. The card is also issued to guests for a fee.

Hochschulservice GmbH

The Studierendenwerk is the sole shareholder of the subsidiary Hochschulservice GmbH (HSG). Around 39 permanent employees and around 200 marginal employees work at the HSG. The criticism arises again and again that the Studierendenwerk operates wage dumping. The reason for this is that the HSG primarily employs catering staff who are paid according to the tariff of the food-gourmet restaurant union . This wage is lower than the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states , according to which employees of the student union are paid.
