SubRosa was an American stoner rock , sludge , and doom metal band from Salt Lake City , Utah , that was formed in 2005 and disbanded in 2019.

history

The band was formed in the summer of 2005 by guitarist and singer Rebecca Vernon and violinist Sarah Pendleton. Shortly after the foundation, Vernon began writing her first songs in her apartment. This resulted in the self-published demo The Worm Has Turned , which was released in June 2006. The debut album followed in March 2008 on I Hate Records under the name Strega , which had been mixed by Devo Andersson . In the same year Kim Pack was added as a further violinist. Self-published the EP Swans Trapped Under Ice a year later . The album No Help for the Mighty Ones, produced by Andy Patterson , was released on Profound Lore Records in summer 2011 . The material was mixed and mastered by Devo Andersson. Patterson joined the cast in 2012 as a drummer. In the following years the group performed at various festivals such as the Roadburn Festival 2015 , the Hellfest , the Fall into Darkness , the Scion Rock Fest , the Housecore Horror Fest , the Uninvited , the Southwest Terror Fest , the Hopscotch , the Treefort , the Durbuy Festival in Belgium , the Doom over Leipzig , the Psycho California and the Pabst Festival in Portland , Oregon. In addition, the group went on three tours through Europe , as well as on tour through the USA and Canada with Boris and Atlas Moth in August 2014. In September 2015 they went on tour through the west coast of the United States and Canada as a support act for Cult of Luna and Minsk and played with Samothrace and Eight Bells . In 2014, SubRosa opened up for Neurosis and Deafheaven in various appearances in Denver , Colorado . In September 2013, the next album, More Constant Than the Gods, was released. In the following year Levi Hanna joined as bassist. In August 2016, For This We Fought the Battle of Ages, the next album was released. On May 20, 2019, the band announced their breakup.

style

According to laut.de , the band plays an aggressive mix of Doom Metal and Sludge, which is "enriched with melancholy violin sounds and traditional American folklore ". More Constant Than the Gods is more accessible than its predecessors, while For This We Fought the Battle of Ages sounds more bulky and viscous again. Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia found the group based their music on doom metal, sludge and stoner rock. The music is enriched by Gothic , Psychedelic and Indie Rock . In an interview with Andreas Schiffmann, Rebecca Vernon stated that For This We Fought the Battle of Ages is a concept album based on the novel Wir by Yevgeny Iwanowitsch Zamyatin . The songs were structured like an opera in order to bring them into line with the book in terms of narrative. In the same issue, Schiffmann reviewed the album and stated that the band had developed from "Melvin's droning rock to a doom fortress". On the sound carrier there are "tapeworm songs as well as song-like moments, both traditional flat-maker riffs and avant-garde violin- killing, earthly post-metal heaviness and the spirituality of the Jex Thoths removed from this world". In addition, elements from Gothic Rock in the style of Siouxsie and the Banshees would be used.
