Sultaca Alta is a scattered settlement in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Sultaca Alta is the fifth largest town in the canton of Villa Charcas in the newly created Municipio Villa Charcas in the province of Nor Cinti . The village is located at an altitude of 2981  m on the left, northern bank of the Río Mosoj Lajta, which flows into the Río Terrado and belongs to the river system of the Río Pilcomayo via the Río Inca Huasi and the Río Pilaya .

Sultaca Alta is located in the mountainous region of the Cordillera de Tajsara o Tarachaca in the semi-arid transition area between the semi-humid mountain forests of the eastern mountain ranges of Bolivia and the arid Altiplano .

The annual rainfall varies between 350 and 550 mm and occurs mainly in the months from November to March; the winter months from May to August are largely free of precipitation (see Culpina climate diagram). The monthly average temperatures in the region are between almost 20 ° C in December and 5 to 8 ° C in June / July.

Traffic situation

Sultaca Alta is at a distance of 445 kilometers by road south of Sucre , the capital of the department.

From Sucre, the paved road Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction to Potosí , the capital of the department bordering to the west. From here the Ruta 1 leads south , which is still paved for the first 37 kilometers to Cuchu Ingenio . After another 146 kilometers, the Ruta 1 reaches the city of Camargo . Another 19 kilometers south of Camargo, a dirt road branches off in an easterly direction, crosses the Río Camblaya and overcomes a height difference of 600 meters over the next 47 kilometers to Culpina. To the east of Culpina, a road branches off to the northeast and after a further 21 kilometers past Incahuasi it reaches the community of Villa Charcas . At the northern edge of Villa Charcas a country road branches off to the west, which crosses the Río Papa Chajra and the Río Terrado and after five kilometers reaches Sultaca Alta .
