Sundern is a district of the East Westphalian district town of Gütersloh in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

With Hof Meier zu Gütersloh an der Dalke, there is a nucleus of the city of Gütersloh in the Sunderaner area, right on the border with the city center . A farm is said to have existed there as early as the year 800.

The peasantry Sundern formed the eastern end of the reign of Rheda , which in 1816 the Prussian province of Westphalia was incorporated. Sundern belonged to the municipality of Gütersloh-Land , which was incorporated into the city of Gütersloh on April 1, 1910.

In 1903, the Teutoburg Forest Railway put the Gütersloh-Sundern station, later Gütersloh-Ost, into operation, which played a major role in the commercial development of the farmers, who were until then agricultural. At the same time, there are important recreational areas in Sundern, which were deliberately set up in the 19th century to compensate for the advancing industrialization, such as the Gütersloh city park , the botanical garden integrated into it and the park pool.

An urban planning challenge for the next few years arises from the withdrawal of the British Army by 2020. This raises the question of the future use of the air intelligence barracks built in 1934/35 (today Mansergh Barracks) on Verler Strasse. The approximately 35 hectare site includes residential buildings, warehouses, workshops, a kindergarten, the King's School , a cinema and numerous sports facilities. In addition, numerous single-family houses in the so-called English settlement (built in the 1950s) near the city park, in which mainly officer families live, are vacated.

Landmarks, public buildings, churches

Sundern is represented with around 20 entries in the monument list of the city of Gütersloh , including sights such as the Meierhof Gütersloh with Meiers Mühle, the residential buildings in the villa district, the city park and the botanical garden as well as other well-known buildings such as the Parkbad or Avenstroths Mühle.

The Gütersloh Clinic , the Parkbad , the “ Die Welle ” leisure pool , the Heidewald Stadium and the Church of the Redeemer and St. Matthew's are located in the Sunderaner area . There are two primary schools (Sundern primary school and Heidewaldschule), the school center east with a secondary school (Hauptschule Ost) and a secondary school (Geschwister-Scholl-Schule) as well as a special school with a special focus on learning (Schule an der Dalke). On the grounds of the Mansergh Barracks is also the King's School attended by children of the British Army personnel stationed in the region .

societies

Almost 100 private and school horses are housed in the riding facility of the Sundern-Spexard riding club. More than 300 members are involved in the Sundern civic association founded in 1947. The Falke Sundern rifle club, founded in 1929, disbanded in 2012 after the number of members had fallen below 100.
