description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe greatheadii grows individually, is stemless or short stem-forming. The narrowed leaves form dense rosettes . Your leaf blade is about 47 inches long and 12 inches wide. There are many elongated, whitish spots on the dark, glossy green upper side of the leaf, which converge near the base and form transverse bands. The light green, lined underside is usually spotless. The stinging, brown teeth on the usually cartilaginous, brown leaf margin are about 5 millimeters long and are up to 20 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence consists of about four to six branches and is up to 175 centimeters long. The cylindrical grapes are 9 to 30 centimeters long. Long grapes are loose. However, they are usually short and dense. The pointed bracts have a length of about 32 millimeters and are 5 millimeters wide. The white flowers have broad, red central ribs. They stand on 12 millimeter long flower stalks . The flowers are 32 millimeters long and rounded at their base. At the level of the ovary , they have a diameter of 7 millimeters. Above that, the flowers are narrowed to 5 millimeters and finally expanded to 8 millimeters. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of 9 to 10 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus barely protrude from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe greatheadii is common in Botswana , Malawi , Mozambique , Zaire , Zimbabwe , South Africa and Swaziland . Aloe greatheadii var. Greatheadii grows on grasslands in Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zaire, Zimbabwe and the South African province of Northern Cape . Aloe greatheadii var. Davyana is distributed in the South African provinces of Free State , Gauteng , KwaZulu-Natal and North Cape as well as in Swaziland on grasslands on rocky slopes.

The first description by Selmar Schönland was published in 1904. A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Aloe greatheadii var. Greatheadii
  • Aloe greatheadii var. Davyana (Schönland) Glen & DS Hardy

Aloe greatheadii var. Greatheadii
synonyms are Aloe pallidiflora A.Berger (1905) and Aloe termetophila De Wild. (1921).

Aloe greatheadii var. Davyana
The differences to Aloe greatheadii var. Greatheadii are: The variety sprouts occasionally and then forms dense groups. The leaves are up to 20 centimeters long. The 60 to 100 centimeter long inflorescence consists of three to five branches and bears conical grapes. The bracts and flower stalks are 20 to 25 millimeters long. The cloudy brick-red to pink-colored, 27 to 35 millimeters long flowers have tips with white edges.

It was first described as Aloe davyana in 1905 by Selmar Schönland. Hugh Francis Glen and David Spencer Hardy introduced the species as a variety to Aloe greatheadii in 1987 .

Synonyms of this variety are Aloe barbertoniae Pole-Evans (1917), Aloe comosibracteata Reynolds (1936), Aloe graciliflora Groenew. (1936), Aloe labiaflava Groenew. (1936), Aloe mutans Reynolds (1936), Aloe verdoorniae Reynolds (1936) and Aloe davyana var. Subolifera Groenew. (1939).

Ronell Renett Klopper , Olwen Megan Grace , Gideon Francois Smith and Estrela Figueiredo suggested the recognition of Aloe graciliflora as an independent species in 2011 .
