The mountain police - very close to heaven (original title: Un passo dal cielo , in German: One step from heaven ) is an Italian television series. It is produced by Lux Vide SpA in collaboration with Rai Fiction. The series runs on Rai 1 and Rai 1 HD . Since the end of July 2017, it has been broadcast in a German dubbed version on BR television .

The focus of the series is Pietro, inspector in the South Tyrolean Forest Corps and head of the forest station in the community of San Candido in Alta Pusteria . Un passo dal cielo was the first television series to be broadcast in HD in Italy (on Rai 1 HD) and is the first project to be funded by the South Tyrolean location agency Business Location Südtirol (BLS). The first season was directed by Enrico Oldoni . Riccardo Donna and Salvatore Basile are the directors of the second season. The third season was directed by Monica Vullo and Jan Maria Michelini . Jan Maria Michelini continued directing for the fourth season. The soundtrack is from Pino Donaggio .

The series describes events around the forest ranger Pietro, played by Terence Hill . Pietro is a good mountaineer who tragically lost his wife on a rock face and has been living in seclusion on Lake Braies since that accident . The local police station is also housed in the forest station.

At the beginning of the series, a detective is transferred there. It is the Neapolitan Vincenzo Nappi who, as a man of the big city, meets completely new challenges in Alta Pusteria. Due to the close proximity of the police and the forest administration, Pietro is repeatedly involved in the criminal cases of Commissario Nappi, while the latter is confronted with the mountain world, which for him was far away in Naples.

Pietro's colleague and friend is the former woodcutter Felicino Scotton, known as “Roccia” (rocks).

Originally the series should be called "L'uomo dei boschi" ("The man from the woods"). All characters are Italian native speakers, although 85% of the population of Innichen have German as their mother tongue, which makes the series less authentic. However, the exterior shots were shot on the original locations.

The first season with twelve episodes was produced in 2010 and broadcast in spring 2011. The series ran on six Sundays in the main evening program. Two episodes were broadcast one after the other. The season had the best ratings averaging 5.9 million viewers. In May 2011 the production of a second season was decided. The first season was repeated in July 2012 in the main evening program at Rai 1. The second season was broadcast from October 14, 2012 and consists of 14 episodes that were broadcast on 8 evenings.

The fact that Innichen is in German-speaking territory is referred to again and again. In the episode L'ape regina , Commissario Nappi speaks a few words of German with Pietro. More regional references were planned for the second season. The production ensures that the family names that are used in the series actually appear in the Innichen area. In winter, photos of the Krampus parades were made. All labels on the town hall of Innichen, the forester's house, the police vehicles etc. are German and Italian in accordance with the South Tyrolean Statute of Autonomy.

After the two successful seasons, a third was produced. Filming in Alta Pusteria began at the end of May 2014. Gaia Bermani Amaral, who played the forest administration's veterinarian in the first two seasons, is no longer there in the third season. In her place, the Spaniard Rocío Muñoz Morales plays the model Eva Fernández. Terence Hill, Gabriele Rossi and Claudia Gaffuri and Katia Ricciarelli left the series at the end of the third season.

After the success of the third season, a fourth followed. Terence Hill is replaced in this by the Italian actor Daniele Liotti , who took over as Francesco Neri, head of the San Candido forest police. The fourth season was shot in 2016. The main locations were again San Candido and Braies in Alta Pusteria, South Tyrol. Some scenes were shot in Sexten , Toblach , Niederdorf and Meran and, as before, in completely different Italian regions.
