geography
The city lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada , 12 kilometers east of Ione , 45 kilometers south of Coloma and 55 kilometers southeast of Sacramento . The California State Route 49 runs right through Sutter Creek.
history
When Johann August Sutter accidentally found a gold nugget during the construction work for a sawmill ( Sutter's Mill ) to be operated with water power in Coloma in 1848 , this marked the beginning of the California gold rush . Many prospectors settled then in the area down, so also named after the sawmill owners flowing near Bach 'Sutter Creek ". The new settlement was at times called Sutter , Sutter's Creek , Suttercreek or Sutterville , before it was finally named Sutters Creek . There was now intensive prospecting for gold and mines such as the Old Eureka Mine and the Sutter Creek's Union Mine have been opened. In addition to gold, valuable minerals were also found and mined. The mines were owned or co-owned by such important figures as Hetty Green and Leland Stanford . Even foundries and metal-working manufacturing as the Knight Foundry were put into operation.
After the end of the gold rush, many adventurers left the place, which is now in demand as a tourist center and retirement home. The area is becoming increasingly important as a wine-growing area due to its favorable climatic conditions , and the red wine variety Zinfandel is grown in particular .
