Sweet Mud is a 2006 Israeli drama film .

action

In 1973, 13-year-old Dvir lived with his single mother Miri in a progressive kibbutz . Although the residents pride themselves on their open mind, they have enormous problems with Miri, who has been admitted to an institution more than once because of her unstable psyche. The mother seems to be breaking with the strict rules of the community, which forbid family relationships to one another and submit to the common good. While preparing for the Bar Mitzvah , Miri's Swiss friend appears, who lets Dvir dream of a future in Geneva . However, the kibbutz does not tolerate any foreign bodies, so she removes them after a short time and Miri collapses again. As he stands by his mother, Dvir discovers a growing structure of lies within the kibbutz that is supposed to forbid any individual happiness.

criticism

“The basically familiar story about puberty, self-assurance and the cutting of the cord deconstructs the social utopia of the kibbutz in an appealing way and reflects the conflicts in Israeli society. The play of the main actors is just as rich in nuances as the atmospheric lighting and the color and image composition. "

“Unfortunately, the description of everyday life from a kibbutz by director and screenwriter Dror Shaul (the story has autobiographical traits) is very inconsistent. Many scenes fizzle out, remain unsolved or make no sense. "

"Sweet Mud", this powerful story of growing up under oppressive circumstances, is one of the most radical works in a whole series of artistic confrontations with the ideals of the parents' generation in Israel, a reckoning that could not be more merciless. "

"Director Dror Shaul's goal was" to make a film about the longing for warmth and feelings, the longing for the illusion that we are not actually alone. "With the help of his fantastic actors, he succeeded very sensitively."
