Swing (label)
Swing was a French jazz record label founded in 1937 and published until 1951. It was the first record company in the world to devote itself exclusively to jazz.
History of the label
The Swing label , founded in 1937 by Charles Delaunay and Jean Berard, emerged from the activities of the Hot Club de France . The label's first two releases were the versions of " Honeysuckle Rose " and " Crazy Rhythm " , which Coleman Hawkins , who was a guest in Paris , recorded with an all-star band on April 28, 1937, including Benny Carter , Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli and Aimé Barelli were among them.

From the end of the 1930s, Swing made recordings on 78s by the Quintette du Hot Club de France around Reinhardt and Grappelli as well as by Dicky Wells , André Ekyan , Eddie South , Bill Coleman , Michel Warlop , Philippe Brun , Alix Combelle , Herman Chittison , Teddy Weatherford , Mezz Mezzrow , Tommy Ladnier , Rex Stewart , Louis Bacon , Frankie Newton , Hubert Rostaing , André Hodeir and Arthur Briggs .
After the war, musicians who lived or performed in France, such as Kenny Clarke ( “Epistrophy”, “Oop Bop Sh'Bam” ), Benny Carter, Jonah Jones , Gene Sedric , Don Byas , Billy Taylor , Louis Armstrong , Dizzy Gillespie and Gerald Wiggins also took part , Rex Stewart , Sidney Bechet , Harold "Shorty" Baker , Gerry Mulligan and James Moody as well as the most important French jazz musicians of the post-war period such as Noël Chiboust , Bernard Peiffer , Claude Luter , Michel de Villers , Hubert Fol , Jacques Diéval , Martial Solal and Géo Daly and Michel Attenoux at Swing . Consequently, not only musicians of swing and older music styles published there, but also those of bebop .
License recordings
In addition, the label released US jazz under license, such as bebop productions by Charlie Parker , Thelonious Monk , Art Pepper and the Blue Note recordings by Miles Davis from 1952/53. The last publication on shellac was a 1954 version of the standard "Pennies from Heaven" by Martial Solal. In the late 1950s and early 1960s , the last recordings made by Cat Anderson , Benny Golson , Lionel Hampton , Bobby Jaspar , Zoot Sims , Clark Terry and Lucky Thompson appeared on LP .
