Symphony of Love (alternative title: Fantastic Symphony ) is a French film biography from 1942 about the composer Hector Berlioz .

action

Hector Berlioz pursues his medical studies rather listlessly; his real interest is in music. During this time he made the acquaintance of the painter Eugène Delacroix and the writer Victor Hugo . He had little success with publishers, and his mother broke him off because of his passion for music. In his private life he has a secret admirer in Marie Martin.

In a performance of William Shakespeare's Hamlet , Berlioz falls in love with the leading actress Harrieth Smithson , who rejects him. In a creative frenzy, he then composes the Symphonie fantastique . However, because of its novelty, this meets with incomprehension among publishers.

After moving with his friend Antoine Charbonnel - as it turns out, in the neighborhood of Harrieth Smithson - Marie learns to her disappointment that Berlioz is in love with Harrieth. When Berlioz ends up in the prison cell after a stormy approach, Antoine stands up for him at Harrieth, whereupon Harrieth gives him a chance.

Berlioz and Harrieth get married. At the premiere of his opera Benvenuto Cellini , Harrieth reacts jealously when Berlioz meets Marie again, who has meanwhile become a singer; at the same time Berlioz made the acquaintance of Niccolò Paganini . Even when son Louis is born, the marriage is not a good star because of Berlioz's lack of success. While Berlioz pursues a bread-and-butter job as a music critic, his friend Antoine is about to take over a pharmacy and thus to move out of the city. Berlioz is surprised to learn from Antoine that Marie had loved Berlioz the whole time, which gives Harrieth even more reason to be jealous. Berlioz and Marie get closer; a little later, Harrieth moves out of the shared apartment with son Louis.

Berlioz is now traveling through Europe to perform his music, which is now becoming more and more successful. Berlioz, however, suspects hypocrisy behind the positive reports in the newspaper. A little later, the Academie musique honors.

Son Louis has since made a career at sea and refuses to contact his father. Louis blames him for the failure of his marriage to Harrieth, who has since passed away. At the urging of his superior, Louis nevertheless contacts his father. Berlioz is happy to see his son again, but he is disappointed that his father has remarried. Marie feels guilty for preventing a reconciliation between father and son and leaves.

Marie arranges a reunion between Louis and Hector Berlioz, who are reconciled , at a performance of La damnation de Faust . A little later Marie collapses while performing a song for Hector and dies. Berlioz composes his Requiem , which is successfully performed.

Reviews

“One of the great 'diversionary films' that were made in France under the German occupation . Staged cumbersome, detailed and heroic. "
