The synagogue in Alsenz , a local community in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in the 1760s. The secular synagogue at Kirchberg 1 is a protected cultural monument .

history

The late baroque hipped roof building made of colored sandstone was inaugurated in 1765 and had the inscription above its entrance: "This is the gate of the Lord, the righteous will enter there (Psalm 118:20)." The school and the teacher's apartment were also located in the building. there was a mikveh in the rear . The architect was possibly Johann Friedrich von Sckell.

In 1933 the synagogue building was sold by the Jewish community to a local farmer who used it as a storage shed.

The Torah shrine is now in the Palatinate History Museum in Speyer .

During the renovation work on the synagogue building in the 1980s, a geniza was discovered in the attic .
