The former synagogue at Eichwaldstrasse 15 in Ehrstädt , a district of Sinsheim in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1836 and restored in 2004/05.

history

Before the synagogue was built, the services took place in a prayer room, which was located in a building belonging to the lords of Degenfeld .

Since the Jewish community in Ehrstädt could not finance the construction of a synagogue from its own resources, the headmaster Elias Kahn applied for a collection to be carried out among the Jewish communities in the Grand Duchy of Baden in April 1824 . The master builder Franz Joseph Kistner from Sinsheim won the order on February 2, 1836. The ceremonial inauguration of the synagogue, designed as a two-story rectangular building with a gable roof, took place in the same year.

In 1838/39 a new ritual bath ( mikveh ) was installed in the synagogue building, which now complied with the hygiene regulations of the health authorities.

As a result of emigration and emigration, the number of community members decreased more and more and after the dissolution of the Jewish community in 1912 the synagogue building was sold. For decades it served as a cattle shed and barn , and the large gate broken through the south side dates from that time. An inscription above the entrance ( Psalm 118 : 20) and a wedding stone are the external characteristics of the former synagogue to this day.

In 2004/05 the city of Sinsheim extensively renovated the building. The barn door, which was subsequently broken in, was glazed and the walled-up windows opened again. Since almost no original components have been preserved inside, the municipality decided to use modern materials in modern forms. Based on the earlier room layout, a new gallery was drawn in and the space of the former niche of the Torah shrine was made recognizable on the inner wall. The building is used today as a club and meeting place.
