Interior view of the synagogue in Bernkastel (around 1890)

The Bernkastel synagogue is located in the Bernkastel-Kues district in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate and was built in 1850/51. The profaned synagogue , an unplastered quarry stone building with arched windows and an entrance on the north side, in Burgstrasse 7 is a protected cultural monument .

history

When a fire was started in a neighboring barn on July 9, 1880, the synagogue and the residential building next to it burned down almost completely. Parts of the interior of the synagogue could be saved. In 1881/82 it was rebuilt and the synagogue was re-inaugurated on the Passover festival in 1882.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was completely devastated by SA men and Bernkastel National Socialists. Because of the narrow location in the old town of Bernkastel, the synagogue was not set on fire. In April 1939 the synagogue building was sold to private individuals.

The synagogue building changed hands twice. Until 1965 there was a joinery in the building. In 1975 the building, which had been vacant for a few years, was renovated.

In the former synagogue there is now a room for cultural events and rooms for overnight accommodation.
