Trittenheim synagogue

The synagogue in Trittenheim was built in 1857 at Olkstraße 18. In 1936 the building was sold to a private individual by the Jewish community. He converted the former synagogue into a residential building. Today a restaurant is housed in the building.

synagogue

As early as 1830 the Jewish community had a prayer room. In 1844, a plot of land was purchased to build a new synagogue. However, construction work did not begin until 12 years later. In 1857 the synagogue, a gable-free plastered building, was inaugurated at Olkstrasse 18. The entrance portal was on the east side of the building. Above the portal was a quotation from Isa. 56 : 7 For  example : For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the peoples. The south side had three large arched windows. On the north side there was an extension with a pent roof and two semicircular windows. A round window was let into the east wall. After the minyan , which was required to hold a service, was no longer obtained in 1936 , the synagogue was abandoned and sold to a private individual. He converted the building into a residential building. Today the former synagogue is used as a restaurant.

Jewish community Trittenheim

The first Jews settled in the Trittenheim area as early as the 18th century. A resident of the Jewish faith from Trittenheim is mentioned as early as 1702. The number of Jewish community members rose steadily up to the middle of the 19th century and reached its highest level in 1865. The Jewish community had a religious school. There was an Israelite women's association on site. From 1896 the deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Trittenheim. Before that in the Jewish cemeteries of the surrounding communities. From 1933, after the seizure of power of Adolf Hitler , the Jewish inhabitants were increasingly disenfranchised. In addition, there were repeated anti-Jewish actions that culminated in the November pogroms in 1938. As a result, many Jewish families left the community. The last Jewish residents were deported in 1943.
