history

Témara was founded in the 12th century by the Almohad Sultan Abd al-Mumin (r. 1130–1163), who had a mosque and a madrasa built. In the 17th century, Sultan Mulai Ismail had a wall built around the mosque. Later the sultans Mulai Abd ar-Rahman (r. 1822-1859) and Moulay Abd al-Aziz (r. 1894-1908) expanded the buildings into a fortress ( kasbah ) .
