TAS Mani

TAS Mani (* around 1936 in India ; † March 14, 2020 in Bengaluru ) was an Indian composer, music producer and percussionist as well as band leader , singer and music lecturer . He was the founding director and for several decades the head of the Karnataka College of Percussion in Bengaluru, southern India.

Career and work

TAS Mani is a student and son of "the most famous mridangam player in India". He specializes in percussion music from southern India and mainly plays the double membrane drum , the mridangam, which is widely used there . He also appears as a singer and interprets in particular traditional South Indian carnatic music .

In 1975 he founded the Karnataka College of Percussion (KCP) in Bangalore, the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka , and was its director from then on. The KCP has meanwhile trained numerous musicians from all over India and also from abroad in classical South Indian music, but has also dealt with cross-genre projects, such as working with Indian and European jazz and rock musicians. Mani's percussion students include world music interpreter Trilok Gurtu and Indian jazz drummer Ramesh Shotham .

Mani leads the ten-person ensemble Tala Tarangini , with whom he presents classical South Indian music and its rhythmic peculiarities, such as the South Indian drum language Konnakol , in various programs .

Both with his Carnatic music ensemble and as a session musician , Mani gave numerous concerts at home and abroad, had several worldwide tours and was involved in numerous music recordings.

In many countries around the world Mani has taught or given lectures on percussion music , such as at Bangalore University as well as at universities and music colleges in Australia, Poland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He has also given percussion lessons at international workshops and seminars, and has published several teaching lessons and practice CDs.

TAS Mani lived in Bangalore with his wife, the singer RA Ramamani .
