The TSV Germania Helmstedt (officially: Turn- und Sportverein Germania Helmstedt from 1849 eV ) is a sports club from Helmstedt . The first soccer team took part in the DFB Cup once and played in the highest amateur league in Lower Saxony for twelve years .

history

The roots of the club lie in the men's gymnastics club in Helmstedt , which was founded on May 12, 1849 . In 1902, some high school students wanted to set up a football department in MTV, but this was rejected. In response, the football club SC 02 Helmstedt was founded . Both clubs merged in 1922 to form TSV Helmstedt , but just a few months later the footballers split off again as SC 02 Helmstedt as part of the clean divorce . 1933 SC 03 had ordered by the Nazis to the 1899 Helmstedt Turn Club Connect. On December 4, 1945, the TSV Helmstedt merged with the MTV Helmstedt to form TSV Helmstedt. On May 23, 2014, the TSV Helmstedt merged with the SV Germania Helmstedt to today's gymnastics and sports club Germania von 1849 Helmstedt eV

Today's TSV initially had no football department. It was only when members of the local customs authority joined the club in 1949 that the TSV received a football department, which was popularly known as the “Zöllnerelf”. Few civilians played football for TSV until well into the 1950s . In 1961 the team from Helmstedt rose to the third-class Braunschweig amateur league and three years later, under strange circumstances, they were runner-up. Although the FC Schöningen 08 still had to play catch-up games, the NFV declared the Helmstedt champions and already completed the first promotion rounds. Then Schöningen won his remaining games and was suddenly level with TSV. The NFV then had to set a playoff for the championship that the Helmstedt lost 2-1. The Schöninger then took the place of the TSV in the promotion round and also took over the two victories won by the "Zöllnerelf".

After all, the Helmstedt qualified for the newly created Association League East . In 1973 the TSV became champions, but failed in the promotion round to the Lower Saxony state league . Since the local rival Helmstedter SV was relegated at the same time, the "Zöllnerelf" took over local supremacy. A year later the TSV secured the championship again and also prevailed in the promotion round. For the first time a Helmstedt soccer team played in the highest amateur league in Lower Saxony. There it went uphill. In 1977 the Helmster lost the playoff for the championship against VfB Peine with 1: 5, but still qualified for the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord . There the TSV failed at VfL Pinneberg . In 1978 the team qualified for the DFB-Pokal and lost 5-1 at OSV Hannover in the first round . In 1979 and 1981, the "Zöllnerelf" was fourth and narrowly missed the renewed promotion round participation.

In terms of sport, things went downhill for the Helmstedt team and in 1986 it went down to the Landesliga Ost , where the team was passed through to the Braunschweig regional league in the following season and relegated to the regional league in 1989. It wasn't until 1997 that it went back up to the Braunschweig regional league . There the team became champions in 2004 due to the better goal difference compared to VfB Fallersleben , but missed promotion to the Lower Saxony league after a 2-0 defeat in the play-off against TuS Celle FC . Five years later, the TSV rose from bottom of the table and pulled his team back to the district league. In 2016, he won the championship in the Helmstedt district league and the associated promotion to the district league. Two years later, Germania was relegated and passed into the 1st district class in the 2018/19 season.

Handball

The handball players of TSV Helmstedt rose in 2001 to the Lower Saxony Oberliga . Three years later, the team was withdrawn despite sporting relegation. A year later, the TSV handball players joined the Handballfreunde Helmstedt-Büddenstedt syndicate , which made it to the Lower Saxony Oberliga in 2012.
