history

The sports club Turun Toverit ( TuTo for short ) was founded in 1929, the ice hockey department was established in 1946. Ice hockey bandy quickly replaced as a winter sport in Turku, while football was played in summer. At first Turun Toverit played on a regional level, but in 1965 he was promoted to the first division, the then Suomi-sarja . In 1968 and 1970, the team took third place in the Finnish championship and thus achieved the greatest successes in the club's history. In the early 1970s, the two city rivals TPS and TuTo played in the SM-liiga. In 1973, both teams moved to the Kupittaan jäähalli ice rink (today: Marli Areena), where TuTo continues to play with brief interruptions. TPS has been playing in the much larger Turkuhalli since 1990 .

In 1975 the team had to relegate from the first division and from then on played in the newly created second division, the I-divisioona . In 1988, the ice hockey department separated from the parent club and was henceforth called TuTo Hockey .

The team won the I-divisioona championship in 1987 and 1994 and rose to the SM-liiga in the latter year . Until 1996 TuTo held in the first division before relegating to the Mestis . In 2000, a joint-stock company, TuTo Hockey Oy , was founded for the professional team . At the end of the 2007/08 season TuTo reached the championship title of the Mestis, but was not allowed to rise to the first division, as this was a closed division.
