Taal is a Hindi film by the Indian director Subhash Ghai and a typical representative of Bollywood cinema of the 1990s - a “ masala movie” with the classic ingredients: beautiful women, pithy heroes, lively music, exuberant dance scenes, sophisticated choreography, superstars , an unhappy love - but with a happy ending, a couple that transcends class and family barriers, quarrels and reconciliation between fathers and sons / daughters, a fight for family honor - and a villain with a golden heart.

action

Manav meets Mansi: The industrialist's son Manav Mehta (Akshay Khanna) returns from London to his father Jagmohan ( Amrish Puri ), who is currently on a business trip through the province. He meets Mansi ( Aishwarya Rai ) and falls in love with her. Mansi is the daughter of the musician Tara Babu (Alok Nath). His father, in turn, courted Mansi's father: the businessman Jaghoman wants to use the musician's connections to the local mayor. So far, so good: Manav manages to win Mansi's heart - even if they both know that their families will put up resistance due to the difference in class. Manav promises Mansi to marry her against all odds - then he leaves for Bombay with his father and his entourage.

Mansi cannot keep her love for the industrialist's son a secret from her father Tara Babu - who, despite major concerns, does not want to refuse his daughter. They travel to Bombay for a surprise visit to the Mehtas estate - Manav's family takes the opportunity to humiliate the poor provincials. The argument becomes more heated and finally seizes the patriarchs: Tara Babu slaps Jagmohan in his own house. Both of them feel deeply humiliated and the son and daughter each step up to their father. For the sake of family honor, they part with each other.

The deeply sad Mansi meets the music producer Vikrant Kapoor (Anil Kapoor), who shamelessly plagiarizes her father's music - or as he puts it: "remixes". The cheerful cynic Vikrant signs Mansi and develops her into a superstar - part of her contract, however, is that she is not allowed to fall in love or even marry for three years. Vikrant tries to keep the rejected Manav away from his star, after all he asks for her hand himself, which her father accepts. The engaged couple travels to Canada, where Mansi is slated to compete in the MTV World Awards.

Manav is still convinced that Mansi will return to him and retires to his father's country house. The house catches fire and Manav risks his life to save a Mansi scarf from the fire. His father also realizes that he doesn't want to stand in the way of his son's happiness - he is reconciled with Mansi's father Tara Babu. Mansi reads about Manav's deed in Canada, but still refuses to admit that she loves him. After all, it is Vikrant of all people who sends his bride to Manav in front of the registry office. Because as his mother always said to him: "True love means sacrifice":
