The Day of the stamp (TOB) based on an idea by Hans von Rudolphi back and was first in December 1935 in Austria committed. It should draw attention to the importance of the postage stamp for the post office and the general public through exhibitions, special stamps and other activities.

In Germany , the day of the postage stamp was celebrated for the first time on January 7, 1936, the birthday of Heinrich von Stephan . In 1941 the Deutsche Reichspost issued its own special stamp for the first time. An additional stamp followed annually until 1944 . Three of the four stamps appeared in January and the last in October 1944.

The issue of special stamps for "Stamp Day" continued in the Federal Republic , Berlin and the GDR .

“This year, Germany's stamp collectors are celebrating“ Stamp Day ”on January 12th, honoring the founder of the Universal Postal Union , Heinrich von Stephan. The Deutsche Reichspost is issuing a special stamp for 6 + 24 Rpf . The green-colored stamps have been produced in the Staatsdruckerei Vienna in gravure printing based on a design by the artist Meerwald , Berlin-Wilmersdorf, and are 26 × 31 mm in size.

The stamps are sold on January 12, 1941 at the special post offices set up for the events of the Reich Association of Philatelists and the KdF Collectors' Groups (see Official Gazette No. 1005/1941 p. 5) and from January 13 to the end of February In 1941 delivered to the post offices at the headquarters of the Reich Postal Directorates [...]. Insofar as the stamps are sold at the post offices, the surcharge of Rpf 24 goes entirely to the Kulturfonds , while the surcharge of the stamps sold at the special post offices set up for the events of the Reichsbund der Philatelisten and the Kdf collector groups is 16 Rpf to the Kulturfonds and 8 Rpf flow to the organizations.
The RPDs have received special rulings on the delivery and transfer of the auction proceeds. The provisions of the AmtsblVf apply to the arithmetic treatment. No. 600/1940 p. 681 accordingly.
