Talk Is Cheap is the first solo album of the Rolling Stones - Guitarist Keith Richards . It was released on October 3, 1988 on Virgin Records . His backing band was called X-Pensive Winos .

History of origin

Keith Richards (left) and Steve Jordan while recording the album, New York 1988

In 1987 the Rolling Stones found themselves in a major crisis. The differences between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were at a new high. Mick Jagger devoted himself mainly to his solo career in the 1980s, in 1987 he released his second solo album Primitive Cool . Keith Richards then decided to also release an album without the Rolling Stones. He already knew most of the members of his backing band X-Pensive Winos from working on the Chuck Berry documentary Hail! Hail! Rock and roll .

Talk Is Cheap was recorded at Air Studios in Montserrat ( Caribbean ) and Le Studio in Montreal ( Canada ). Richards wrote the pieces together with drummer Steve Jordan and produced the album with him.

After the release, the band went on tour through eleven cities in the United States . She played almost exclusively her own pieces. A completely new edition of the record with extensive bonus material has been announced for 2019.

Music genre

The album cannot be classified stylistically. I Could Have Stood You Up (with former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor as guest) is classic rock 'n' roll, other songs reflect Richard's preference for reggae . The tracks all have a very groovy , filigree rhythm , for which Richard's guitar playing is also known. Keith Richards demands that “the roll” in rock music should regain its weight: “Everyone is talking about rock these days; The problem with this is that they forget the role. "

The title You Don't Move Me is understood as a settlement with Richards' ' Glimmer Twin' because of various statements in the text that can be related to Mick Jagger .

Singles

Take It So Hard , Make No Mistake (with Sarah Dash as a singing partner) and Struggle (as a promo CD) were released as singles .
