Tamara Faye Messner (born March 7, 1942 in International Falls , Minnesota ; † July 20, 2007 in Loch Lloyd , Missouri ) was an American Christian singer , evangelist , entrepreneur , author and television personality . She was the former wife of the scandalous television preacher Jim Bakker .

origin

The oldest of eight children, Tamara Faye LaValley was born in International Falls as the daughter of Pentecostal preachers Carl and Rachel Fairchild LaValley. Her parents married in 1941, a year before she was born. Shortly after the birth, her parents divorced and she lived alone with her mother and brother. When she was six years old, her mother married a worker in a paper mill. With this her mother had four more children.

In the following years she and her mother had to look after the household and her siblings. It was her aunt who took her to church for the first time. She joined the Assemblies of God at the age of ten . Before graduating from college in 1960, her mother suggested that Tammy Faye become a pastor . After she together with her future husband Jim Bakker of the North Central University came off, she worked in a boutique. In 1962 they moved to North Carolina together .

Television as a medium

Jim and Tammy Bakker were already active on television while in Minneapolis and later founding members of the Christian talk show The 700 Club in Portsmouth, Virginia . In Portsmouth they developed a Christian children's television show called Jim and Tammy and a children's show with puppets that aired on CBN from 1964 to 1973 . You were also a co-founder of the Trinity Broadcasting Network . In the mid-1970s, she and her husband founded the PTL Club , a Christian television network that was later shaken by scandals that ultimately led to bankruptcy.

In 1996, she co- hosted the television program The Jim J. and Tammy Faye Show with Jim J. Bullock . After she was diagnosed with colon cancer, she left the show and was replaced. In the following years she was the focus of various documentaries with the titles The Eyes of Tammy Faye (1999) and a sequel, Tammy Faye: Death Defying (2004) by Lions Gate Films .

Tammy's appearances with thickly applied mascara and permanent make-up also gave her a certain popularity in the gay scene. She has several imitators with drag queens and is one of the first evangelical Christians to gain support in the LGBT scene. She also thanked several times for the support in the environment after the scandals surrounding her ex-husband.

The Surreal Life

In spring 2004 she appeared on the reality TV show The Surreal Life . Together with Ron Jeremy , Vanilla Ice , Traci Bingham , Erik Estrada and Trishelle Cannatella , she lived in a house in California and had to perform various activities in twelve days.

illness

In 1996, Tamara was diagnosed with colon cancer that later metastasized to the lungs. According to her manager, she died of this on the morning of July 20, 2007.
