International Falls is a city (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Koochiching County in the US -amerikanischen State Minnesota . In 2010 , International Falls had 6,424 residents.
geography
International Falls is located on the Rainy River , which separates the city from the northern city of Fort Frances in the Canadian province of Ontario . Both places are connected to each other by a partly toll bridge . The river forms the drain of Rainy Lake, a few kilometers to the northeast . Voyageurs National Park extends about 18 kilometers to the east . According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 16.6 square kilometers, of which 0.4 square kilometers is water.
history
Although the area around International Falls was known to explorers and missionaries in the 17th century, the area remained largely uninhabited until the late 19th century. The settlement founded was given the name Koochiching , which in the Ojibwa language means "in the vicinity of the lake and river".
On August 10, 1901, it received the status of a Village . Two years later it was renamed International Falls, according to the location of the river with the Koochiching Falls as the state border between Canada and the United States. In 1909 International Falls became a city.
Early in the 20th century, entrepreneur Edward Wellington Backus saw the river's potential for his Minnesota and Ontario Paper Company . He built a dam on the Rainy River for his sawmills and energy. The company, which Boise Cascade took over in 1965, is still one of the largest employers in the region to this day.

International Falls is one of the coldest cities of the 48 contiguous states of the USA, with an average temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius. The city is often referred to as the "Icebox of the Nation", although Fraser , Colorado also claims the name. On an average of 64 days a year, the temperature is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 17.4 degrees Celsius). In the summer months it can still get very warm. The highest measured temperature is 39.4 degrees Celsius and was measured in July. The lowest temperature was measured in January at −48 degrees Celsius.

According to the 2010 census , International Falls had 6,424 people in 2,903 households. The population density was 396.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.16 people lived in each of the 2903 households.
The racial the population was composed of 93.3 percent white, 1.0 percent African American, 2.5 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.1 percent of the population.
21.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.3 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.8 percent were 65 years or older. 51.9 percent of the population was female.
