The Rainy River ( French Rivière à la Pluie ) is a river about 140 kilometers long that forms part of the border between the United States and Canada and thus separates the US state of Minnesota from the Canadian province of Ontario .
The river has its origin in Rainy Lake (French: Lac à la Pluie ), which it leaves on its west side in a west-northwest direction.
The river is crossed by two border bridges, the Baudette-Rainy River International Bridge between Baudette and Rainy River - this city is named after the river - and the Fort Frances-International Falls International Bridge between International Falls , Minnesota and Fort Frances , Ontario - here electricity is also generated with hydropower . On the Canadian side since 1901 to today follows Canadian National is part of Ontario and Rainy River Railway the river. About 19 kilometers northwest of Baudette, the river flows into the Lake of the Woods at its southern end .
The river's catchment area extends eastward to the heights of the country, about 100 km west of Lake Superior , where the southeastern corner of the land ceded to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670 was once located. The river eventually carries its water over the Winnipeg River , Lake Winnipeg, and the Nelson River to Hudson Bay .
Hydropower plants
The Fort Frances hydropower plant has 8 turbines with a total output of 12.8 MW. It is 4 km from the Rainy Lake drain and is operated by AbitibiBowater .
