Carys Davina "Tanni" Gray-Thompson, Baroness Gray-Thompson DBE (born July 26, 1969 in Cardiff ) is a former British athlete from Wales who is one of the most successful Paralympians in Olympic history. Gray-Thompson started in the TW3 classification and set more than 30 world records there. She has been a member of the House of Lords since 2010 .

Life

The athlete, who has a sister named Sian two years older than her, was born with spina bifida , a neural tube malformation , and is dependent on a wheelchair. In 1991 she graduated from Loughborough University with a bachelor's degree in political and social sciences. Over the years she has received honorary doctorates from 25 universities. In 2005 she became Pro Chancellor at Staffordshire University . Gray-Thompson is married since 1999, has a daughter (* 2002) and lives in the small English town of Redcar in the Borough of Redcar and Cleveland in the region North East England .

She works as a presenter and spokesperson for both radio and television, and works for the BBC Wales , S4C and BBC One .

Sports career

Gray-Thompson's first major tournament was the Junior National Games for Wales in 1984. Four years later, she made her debut at the Summer Paralympics in the South Korean capital, Seoul , where she won a bronze medal in the 400-meter race. The British celebrated her international breakthrough at the following Summer Paralympics in Barcelona . There she won four gold medals and dominated the sprint competitions in her classification. While four years later she won only one gold and three silver medals in Atlanta , she was able to repeat her fourfold success in Sydney in 2000 . At the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens , Gray-Thompson secured two victories.

Gray-Thompson also took part in the London Marathon and won there six times (1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2002) in the handicapped race. On February 28, 2007, she announced that she would retire from competitive sport following the Paralympic World Cup taking place in Manchester in May 2008.

Membership in the House of Lords

On March 24, 2010, Tanny Gray-Thompson was named a Life Peeress . She bears the title Baroness Gray-Thompson , of Eaglescliffe in the County of Durham . On March 29, 2010 it was officially introduced into the House of Lords . Gray-Thompson took her oath and was assisted by Sebastian Coe and Ilora Finlay, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff . She spoke the oath in English and Welsh.
