Tarazona y el Moncayo
Tarazona y el Moncayo is a comarca ( administrative unit ) in the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain . The comarca bears the name of the city of Tarazona and the mountain Moncayo and has almost 14,000 inhabitants on an area of 452.4 km² (as of 2017). Its capital is Tarazona , the largest city among the 16 municipalities of the comarca with around 70% of its inhabitants. The comarca in its entirety belongs to the poorly populated Serranía Celtibérica .
The comarca was formed by the law of the Autonomous Community of Aragon of July 2, 2001, which also contains the basic provisions of its constitution.
location
The comarca is located in the extreme northwest of the province of Saragossa and borders in the west on the provinces of La Rioja and Soria (Comarca Campo de Gomara ), in the north on Navarra ( Comarca Tudela ), in the east on the Aragonese comarca Campo de Borja and in the south on the Comarca Aranda .
The most important natural heritage of the Comarca is the approx. 2315 m high Moncayo, the highest peak of the Iberian Mountains . The surrounding area, a nature reserve with great biodiversity and endemic species, is a popular destination for hiking tourists and nature lovers.
Attractions
The most important cultural heritage of the comarca is the old town of Tarazona with its cathedral , bishop's palace and town hall. In addition, the former is Cistercian - Kloster Veruela important. Some places (e.g. Trasmoz or Torrelas ) are dominated by medieval castle ruins (castillos) or Mudéjar church towers.
The poets and writers Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Valeriano Bécquer often used the Veruela Monastery and Mount Moncayo as sources of inspiration for their works.
