Taste of Tears is a Swiss death metal band that was founded in Chur in 1999 .

history

Taste of Tears was founded in 1998 by Marcus Seebach (drums, vocals) and Daniel Patzen (guitar, vocals). The band name was suggested by Seebach. In 1999, with the entry of Duri Camenisch (guitar) and Gion Alig (bass), the first line-up was complete. The first songs are clearly influenced by Melodic Death Metal , but already show varied structures and later increasingly used rhythmic gadgets. Drummer Seebach acted as a full-fledged singer and not only contributed background vocals. In 2004 the first demo CD was released. At the end of the same year, Patzen left the band for personal reasons.

In the following year, Taste of Tears expanded their music, still rooted in Death Metal, to include technical and progressive elements. With the addition of Ivan Strimer as a singer in early 2006, the typical guttural singing of Death Metal was supplemented by clear vocals and the sound became more independent. The promo CD Architects of Downfall , published in 2007, received mostly positive reactions. The songs have been described as being heavily inspired by the scene innovators Death and their follow-up band Control Denied . After support shows for u. a. Sepultura , Legion of the Damned , Entombed , Cataract , Negligence and Mendeed started Taste of Tears preparations for the recordings of the first full album.

In August 2011, the long player Once Human , recorded in the band's own studio and produced by the band members themselves, was released. It comprises eight progressive death metal songs and has been mixed by Tommy Vetterli ( Coroner , Eluveitie , 69 Chambers) and mastered by Dan Suter (Echochamber). Once Human was published by the German label SAOL (a division of the German independent promotion label CMM) and was distributed worldwide via H'Art Musik-Vertrieb. Most critics rated Once Human as “an almost perfect blend of Prog Death and Power Metal!” And “... recommended for fans of this starving genre”.

The members of Taste of Tears are still active in various bands as studio or live musicians, u. a. at Tribes of Caïn , Bodysnatch, Masquerade and Aggressive Fear. The band is currently working on new songs that are more bundled and catchy, but also equally demanding and should come up with more rocky and jazzy elements.

style

music

The two singers cover the whole spectrum from deep growling, screeching, shouting to polyphonic clear chants. The music is praised for its independence, and on the other hand also criticized for being too ambitious.

Texts

The texts deal critically with the development of mankind and metaphorically the abysses of existence are repeatedly taken as the topic and expressed. Most of the time the texts are written in the “first person” or from the point of view of a neutral observer, are interwoven with quotations and refer to a literary model, which is not always immediately apparent. The different types of singing underline the respective statements and emotions. Ivan Strimer is the main text writer. Individual texts and passages are also from Marcus Seebach.

The band logo drawn by Marcus Seebach has curved outer edges and is based on the Florida death metal bands logos of the 1990s. There are parallels to the lettering of Morbid Angel. The "OF" positioned in the center forms an eye with 2 tears, which symbolize bitter and sweet tears. On the CD Once Human , under the band name printed in normal font, the "OF" eye is joined to form a four-leaf clover , called the "4-eye".
