Ewald Schönberg (born August 7, 1882 in Geising , † January 22, 1949 in Dresden ) was a German painter of the New Objectivity .

Life

Ewald Schönberg was born in Geising in the Eastern Ore Mountains in 1882 as the son of a worker. He was an orphan at an early age and grew up with his grandparents. From 1897 onwards, Schönberg completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter with the construction and furniture maker Karl Walther in Geising. In 1900 Schönberg first went to Dippoldiswalde as a carpenter , then to Hainsberg and in the same year to Dresden. In Dresden Schoenberg began self-taught to paint. From 1905 he worked in various drawing offices and also attended evening courses at the Dresden School of Applied Arts . He trained as a furniture draftsman and interior designer. In 1910 Ewald married Schönberg.

In 1920 Schönberg became a lecturer at the Dresden Adult Education Center . From 1925 he worked as a freelance artist and founded a painting school for lay people with the “Malgruppe Schönberg”. From 1927 to 1933 Schönberg worked as an art teacher at the adult education center. The National Socialists initially tried to capture him, but later turned away from him.

Schönberg resigned from the Dresden artists 'association in March 1930 and took part in the artists' group Aktion . He also participated for a short time in the Dresden Secession in 1932 . In 1947 he was a founding member of the artist group Das Ufer .

Ewald Schönberg died in Dresden in 1949. The Ewald-Schönberg-Strasse in Dresden was named after him.

Artistic creation

The work of Ewald Schönberg can be assigned to the New Objectivity with elements of Magical Realism and Naive Painting , shaped by motifs from his homeland in the Eastern Ore Mountains and the people who work there. He was also interested in local artists such as Ferdinand Hodler , Albin Egger-Lienz , Eugène Laermanns , Jean-François Millet and Henri Rousseau . For a long time, the GDR showed no interest in the New Objectivity, so that the work of Ewald Schönberg has only recently been rediscovered from a new objective perspective.
