Tatiana Lvovna Shchepkina-Kupernik
Tatiana Lvovna Schtschepkina-Kupernik ( Russian Татьяна Львовна Щепкина-Куперник ; born January 12 . Jul / 24. January 1874 . Greg in Moscow ; † 27. July 1952 ibid) was a Russian - Soviet writer , poet , playwright and translator .
Life
Shchepkina-Kupernik, daughter of the lawyer Lev Abramowitsch Kupernik and great-granddaughter of the actor Mikhail Semjonowitsch Shchepkin , attended high school. At the age of 12 she was already writing poems in honor of her great-grandfather. In 1892 her play Letnaya Kartinka (Summer Picture) was performed in Moscow's Maly Theater . In the season 1892-1893 she played herself in Korsch's theater. Together with her friend, actress Lidija Borisovna Jaworskaja , she established a relationship with Anton Pavlovich Chekhov , whom they both named Avellan after Admiral Theodor Kristian Avellan . In January 1895 she succeeded in reconciling her deadly quarreling friends Chekhov and Levitan at an unexpected meeting at Chekhov's Melichowo estate , as Ivan Vasilyevich Evdokimov described in detail in his story Levitan . Shchepkina-Kupernik was a long-time close friend of Alexandra Mikhailovna Kollontai .
Shchepkina-Kupernik wrote for various periodicals , for example for Artist , Russkije vedomosti , Russkaya Mysl , Severny Kurjer and Novoje wremja . In the years 1895–1915 she published over 10 volumes of prose and poetry. Her poem on the homeland (From the Fallen of Veste Port Arthur , 1905) became a folk song .
Shchepkina-Kupernik's translations of Edmond Rostand's plays into Russian were very popular : La Princesse lointaine , Cyrano de Bergerac , Les Romanesques , L'Aiglon , Chantecler . She translated Maurice Maeterlinck's prose piece Monna Vanna in verse . She has translated plays by Lope de Vega , William Shakespeare , Pedro Calderón de la Barca , John Fletcher , Molière , Carlo Goldoni , Carlo Gozzi and Richard Brinsley Sheridan . In total, she translated about 60 pieces, mostly after the October Revolution . She translated poems from Lewis Carroll's Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland . She also wrote plays herself, mostly one-act plays .
Shtschepkina-Kupernik was married to the poet and playwright Leonid Grigorjewitsch Munstein (1867-1947, pseudonym Lolo) and his second marriage to the lawyer Nikolai Borissowitsch Polynow (1873-1939). According to the Slavist Donald Rayfield , Shchepkina-Kupernik was known as a St. Petersburg lesbian .
Shchepkina-Kupernik was buried in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery.
