action

An Islamist terrorist cell in Hamburg is planning an attack; the BKA wants to smuggle an undercover investigator into the group. Their bomb specialist committed suicide in Morocco to avoid his arrest; Batu is supposed to act as a substitute. Before Batu started the job, he met the boutique owner Gloria in a bar. The next day, Batu receives his new identity: his legend is the Turkic Taylan, who spent the last five years in a Syrian prison and is now returning to Germany. He became strictly religious in prison and is now looking for a connection in Germany. The presumed head of the terror cell, the convert Christian Marschall, works in a mosque . Through a work colleague and roommate, Batu can establish contact with this person and, after a few tests of his Koranic stability and loyalty , becomes a member of the group of four now. He is sworn in by the emir .

The attack planning is progressing. While driving with Marschall, Batu first learns that the attack target is the congress of German Afghanistan veterans of the Bundeswehr in a Hamburg hotel. Then Marshal Batu confronts Batu with the phone call to his female acquaintance Gloria. The first destination of the trip is Marschall's parental home, from which Marschall and Batu fetch the chemicals stored there. On the way back Batu is brought to an inn where he is to be introduced to the emir personally. He wants to check whether Batu is trustworthy. Although the emir discovers a bug near Batu , he does not show it.

Back in the group's hideout, construction of the bombs is to begin. Since not all the materials are available, Batu fetches the missing cotton from a pharmacy and reports the events of the last few hours to his superior Uwe Kohnau. Back in the shelter, Batu prepares the bombs required for the attack in two trolley cases. He exchanges the chemicals for water. While the group is on their way to the alleged target of the attack, they drop a member who is supposed to be filming the hotel explosion at a bus stop. The rest of the group enters the hotel with their suitcases, where an SEK unit is already waiting for their arrival. Before the three enter the booked room, Batu identifies himself as a police officer and the SEK storms the hallway. The two armed terrorists resist and are shot.

Batu has now realized that the group knew about his infiltration and the exchange of the bombs and that the real bomb must be with the fourth member of the group. Meanwhile, he is still taking the bus through Hamburg, but is being followed by an observation unit. Kohnau and Batu follow the bus. Batu boarded the bus at a bus stop and evacuated it. He tries to dissuade the assassin from his plan to blow himself up with the bomb in his backpack , which he does not succeed. Shortly before the bomb detonates, Batu knocks down the assassin and pulls him off the bus, while the bomb explodes shortly afterwards in the empty bus. After the end of the mission, the maneuver criticism revealed that the emir was a member of the Syrian secret service and had worked with the BKA. Batu meets again privately with the boutique owner Gloria.

criticism

“'The Path to Paradise' is an unusual 'crime scene'. Instead of a Whodunit, Lars Becker's film thrives on the slowly, atmospheric thrill of an undercover action with a completely unpredictable opponent. The final half-hour is extremely exciting. That is typically Lars Becker: not always logical, but highly effective, well told, atmospheric photos, clearly assembled, well cast, ambiguous. "

- Rainer Tittelbach : tittelbach.tv

“For him and his accomplices, 'The Path to Paradise' - the title of the excellently told and exciting 'Tatort' - only leads through the murder of the 'Kafir', the infidels. [...] The film takes on an extremely sensitive subject. [...] The director and screenwriter Lars Becker succeeds - without simplifying the characters in a striking way. [...] It has been a long time since one has seen such a good 'crime scene'. "

- Karen Krüger : FAZ.net

“What you will miss after Kurtulus' final departure in 2012, you will realize again on Sunday at the penultimate Hamburg 'crime scene': The way he is completely absorbed in an Islamist cell as an undercover investigator corresponds to another complete transformation - not only in external terms. […] The way in which the Turkish-born investigator Batu has to disguise and even slander his own identity in a duel with the German fanatic is great psychological thriller art that does not try to ingratiate itself with the viewer. Where else you get dumped in the 'crime scene', you are challenged by the investigator Batu and his actor Kurtulus. Mehmet Kurtulus and the Hamburg 'Tatort' failed? Maybe. But how great they looked!
