action

Thea Grundmann, an older and resolute lady, is looked after by her niece Ada Gerber. Since her husband desperately needs money for a real estate project, she hopes that her efforts will be rewarded with a loan. But instead of being grateful, the aunt wants to leave all the money to her parish. Harry Gerber is extremely disappointed. As he finds out, his aunt has already appointed the notary for the next day. In his financial hardship he doesn't know what else to do and suffocates his aunt with a pillow.

One of Gerber's neighbors is the doctor Dr. Hilde Jahn, she arrives shortly after the crime and is sure that Harry Gerber helped with the death of the old lady. She has scruples about issuing the death certificate. A short time later, Hilde Jahn is found dead in the shed of the Knoll electronics store. Since she was strangled with an electric cable, assistant Wegner considers the owner Heiner Knoll to be suspect. This thesis is fed by a statement by the Gerbers. They claim Knoll blames the doctor for the death of his wife after she did not recognize an illness early enough. Even Brinkmann's boss is sure that the case is as good as solved. After Knoll tries to evade questioning, he is arrested.

Commissioner Brinkmann does not want to commit himself too quickly and continues to research to be on the safe side. For him everything fits together too well and therefore he does not rule out that someone wants to blame Knoll for his deed. Wegner's attentive glance has not escaped the fact that Harry Gerber has a suitable electrical cable. Jahn's younger friend Felix Timm is also suspect, as he has a life insurance policy for the victim and the brother of the victim is already clearing his sister's apartment, which the inspector also finds suspicious. After a closer examination, it is certain that Jahn's body was transported in Timm's car.

Ada Gerber is concerned that her husband might have killed the doctor. She wants to confront him several times, but he evades. If they argue about the subject, they both get into a car accident. Thereupon she is convinced that her husband wanted to kill her too and loudly berates him as a murderer.

Alfred Zöst, a neighbor of the doctor, had reported as a witness. Upon closer inspection, Brinkmann finds that his statement cannot be correct. After the superintendent confronts him that a small pin, like the one he wears, was found on the corpse, he admits the murder. He states that Dr. Hilde Jahn wanted to report him after she discovered sexual abuse in a very young patient. He had seen a favorable moment in the night and then hid the body in Timm's car in Knoll's yard. Since he knew about the quarrel between the two, he hoped that he would never be found to be the culprit. Zöst is arrested and assistant Wegner surprises Brinkmann with the news that Harry Gerber confessed to having killed his heir.
