The Tatra K1 was an articulated tram car made by the Czechoslovak manufacturer ČKD Tatra , of which only two prototypes were built.

history

The railcars developed so far were built to carry as many passengers as possible, but they had very few seats. That is why two two-part articulated cars were built in 1964 and 1965. In the articulated wagons, the middle bogie was not driven, and the electrical equipment was changed: The motors were not controlled by an accelerator, as was the case at that time at Tatra, but by electropneumatically driven contactors . With the K1, the gears were switched automatically, so there was no difference in handling for the driver compared to the T3 . The K1 was the first vehicle to have a compressed air brake.

commitment

Only two prototypes of the type K1 were built, as many weaknesses in the electrical equipment came to light during the test drives. The two vehicles were tested in Prague from 1964 to 1965 with the numbers 7000 and 7001, and then from 1965 to 1968 in Ostrava with the numbers 800 and 801. After 1968 the vehicles returned to the manufacturer Tatra. A series production of these vehicles did not take place. With its shortened body, the 7000 car still served as a test vehicle for the KT4D in Prague and Liberec (for meter gauge).

The K1 served as a model for the development of the Tatra K2 where the electrical equipment from the Tatra T3 was used.
