RT8D5 the type designation one is tram - drive vehicle of the Czech manufacturer CKD Tatra in Prague . The vehicles for the Manila Metro Rail Transit were the last before ČKD Tatra was taken over by Siemens AG .
history
After the traditional markets of ČKD collapsed in the 1990s, it was necessary to look for new sales opportunities. A potential customer was Manila, a new light rail line (today's MRT 3) was to be built here. In March 1996, a new three-part railcar was tested for the first time in Prague under the car number 0029. It was developed from the type KT8D5 , which you could see on the prototype. It also had its controls, division, and the front and rear sections and, compared to the later series vehicles, was also designed for bidirectional operation with one vehicle. As a high-floor vehicle, however, it was equipped with doors without folding steps (as is the case with the series-production vehicles in light rail operations) and could not be used for passenger transport on tram routes. This prototype remained in Prague and was used in October 1998 together with the Tatra T5A5 prototype “0013” and the T3 “6663” for various crash tests in the main workshop in Praha-Hostivař and then scrapped.
The first railcar was flown to Manila at the end of 1997, all others followed by sea. The vehicles are mostly used in triple traction. The RT8D5 series cars have different front sections than the prototype. They also only have one driver's cab and can therefore only be used in double or triple traction in passenger traffic.
