The Tauern is an 1841 m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Ammergau Alps in Ausserfern in Tyrol .
Location and surroundings
The Tauern massif forms the most south-westerly part of the Ammergau Alps. It is bordered in the south by the Heiterwanger See , in the east and north by the Plansee and its outflow, the Archbach , in the west by the Lech Valley , which has expanded into the Reutten basin , and the Ehrenberger Klause . Thus, the Tauern is a relatively isolated, free-standing mountain with more than 800 m Vertical separation . The massif has two secondary peaks, the Schrofennas ( 1708 m above sea level ) is around 700 m east of the main summit, the Zunterkopf ( 1811 m above sea level ) around 500 m northwest of it.
The southern flank up to the peaks of Tauern and Schrofennas belongs to the municipality of Heiterwang , the northern part to the municipality of Breitenwang .
Approach
The usual approach is from the north from Rossrucken ( 994 m above sea level ), the saddle on the road from Reutte to Plansee, over the Zunterkopf and the ridge to the summit. The route is classified as challenging (T3 according to the SAC hiking scale ).
