Teófimo Andrés López Rivera (born July 30, 1997 in New York City , USA ) is an American professional boxer of Honduran descent and current IBF lightweight world champion . The Ring Magazine lists it No. 2 in the world rankings behind Vasyl Lomachenko (as of 2020).

Amateur career

Teófimo López is the son of immigrants from Honduras, was born in Brooklyn , New York and grew up in Davie , Florida . He started boxing at the age of six, is trained by his father and has played around 170 amateur fights. In 2015 he won the National Golden Gloves and also the national Olympic qualification. However, due to his success in the World Series of Boxing , Carlos Balderas was nominated as a US lightweight starter for the 2016 Olympic Games .

López then started for Honduras in the American qualification in Argentina in 2016 and bought an Olympic ticket by reaching the final. At the 2016 Olympic Games, however, he lost in the first fight against the later silver medalist Sofiane Oumiha .

Professional career

In October 2016 he signed a professional contract with the US promotion company Top Rank of Bob Arum . Its manager is David McWater, head of the Split-T Management agency . López won his professional debut on November 5, 2016 by knockout in the second round against the Mexican Ishwar Siqueiros.

In May 2018 he defeated the Brazilians Vitor Jones (record: 14-1) by knockout in the first round and two months later the Brazilian William Silva (25-1) by TKO in the sixth round, thereby WBC Continental Americas champion was . On December 8, 2018, he defeated Mason Menard (34-3) by knockout in the first round and won the US Championship of the USBA and the North America Championship of the NABF .

On February 2, 2019, he defended the title by knocking out in the seventh round against Diego Magdaleno (31-2) and also won the NABA North America title . He won his next fight on April 20, 2019 by knocking out in the fifth round against Edis Tatli (31-2). He defeated the Japanese Masayoshi Nakatani (18-0) on July 19, 2019 unanimously on points.

On December 14, 2019, he won the second round against Richard Commey (29-2) through TKO and thus became IBF lightweight world champion.
