history
The text is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great or, albeit disputed by Luigi Biraghi , Ambrose of Milan . Depending on the liturgical calendar , it is sung to different (nine in the antiphonal ) melodies in Compline . The text was slightly reformed by Pope Urban VIII , but received a third variant in 1974 after the Breviary reform within the liturgical reform after the Second Vatican Council . She restores the first and last verse of the original version, but inserts two new stanzas in place of the second stanza (with the request to ward off the pollutio nocturna ).
Dante quotes the text in Canto 8 of his Purgatory in the Divine Comedy . Francisco Luis Bernárdez translated the hymn into verse.
