Ted Gioia (* 1957 in Palo Alto ) is an American jazz and blues author, jazz pianist and composer .

life and work

Gioia grew up as the son of Mexican-Sicilian parents in Hawthorne in the Los Angeles area . He studied English Literature at Stanford University (1979) and Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford (Bachelor’s) and earned his MBA from Stanford in 1983 . During his studies at Stanford he performed as a jazz pianist, taught a jazz class at Stanford as a student and wrote for the Stanford Daily . Then he worked as a business consultant a. a. for McKinsey and the Boston Consulting Group . For example, he was involved in the LBO and IPO of the optics company Sola International in Menlo Park in the 1990s . He currently (2008) lives in Plano (Texas) , where he works for a business consulting company.

In the 1980s he developed a jazz study program in Stanford, partly together with "Artist in Residence" Stan Getz .

Gioia is the author of several jazz books, including a general jazz history and a history of West Coast jazz that is considered a standard work. For "The Imperfect Art" he received the Deems-Taylor Award from ASCAP . He is one of the two editors-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Jazz Musicians . In the 1990s he devoted himself increasingly to research into traditional folk music from around the world (“Work Songs” and “Healing Songs” also received the Deems-Taylor Award 2007, a book “Love Songs” is in preparation in 2008). In 2008 his book on the Delta Blues was published.

He also writes u. a. for the Los Angeles Times , where he first published the FBI records on Alan Lomax in 2006.

As a jazz pianist he has released three albums, including his debut album "The End of the Open Road" with Larry Grenadier and Eddie Moore .

He is the younger brother of the critic and poet (as well as ex-manager of General Foods and Chairman of the NEA ) Dana Gioia (* 1950).
