Teobert painter
Teobert (o) Painter (* 12. January 1842 in Rome ; † 22. November 1917 in Merida , Mexico ) was a German - Austrian architect , civil engineer , photographer , explorer and researcher of Maya - ruins .
Life
Teobert Maler was born in Rome as the son of a German diplomat . He studied architecture and civil engineering . From 1862 he lived and worked in Vienna for the architect Heinrich Ferstel , who built the Votive Church . Shortly afterwards he acquired Austrian citizenship and in 1864 went to Mexico with the Austrian kk pioneer corps . There he took part in the struggle for the succession to the throne of Archduke Maximilian until his execution on June 19, 1867.
His love for Mexico made him stay in the country and call himself Teoberto from then on. Evidence of this is a graffito that he carved into the "Castillo painter" with the dates 1897 and 1904. He studied the languages of the Totonacs and Zapotecs and documented his travels through photos and reports. While traveling in Central America, he found numerous ruins of Maya buildings by asking the locals , which he documented in words and pictures.
Maler devoted his life and not inconsiderable private fortune entirely to the exploration of the Maya. His reports and especially photographs are of inestimable value today, as many of the sites and works of art he discovered have now been destroyed.
Partial bequests from Teobert Maler are in the Ibero-American Institute of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin , in the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold and in the Peabody Institute of Harvard University in the USA . In addition to many anthropological writings dealing with prehistoric Mexican culture, his estate also contains a large number of architectural drawings.
