Teodor Jarchuk

Teodor Jartschuk (Ukrainian Теодор Ярчук, Polish Teodor Jarczuk ; born May 25, 1896 , Ivankow , Tarnopol district , Austria-Hungary ; † 1941 , Stanislavow , Ukrainian SSR , USSR ) was a Ukrainian Lutheran theologian and pastor . He created a liturgy based on the Byzantine model for the Ukrainian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland.

Life

Teodor Jartschuk was born the son of Landvoigt Ivan Jartschuk and his wife Anna in the village of Ivankow in what is now Borschtschiw Rajon in the Ukrainian Oblast of Ternopil . He attended the Franz-Joseph-Gymnasium in Ternopol . Because he wanted to become a Greek Catholic priest, he went to the Pontifical Ukrainian College in Rome . During a visit to Stanisławów at his fiancée, the daughter of a Protestant deacon, he decided in 1926, after discussions with Pastor Theodor Zöckler , to become a Protestant pastor. He studied Protestant theology at the universities of Tübingen and Erlangen.

After his return he became the first pastor of the Ukrainian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Stanisławów . He translated important Lutheran writings into the Ukrainian language and wrote numerous essays on Lutheran doctrine. In 1933 he created a liturgy based on the Byzantine model for the Protestant church. The model was the liturgy that had been created by the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in the Ukrainian language. He slightly revised this according to Lutheran theology.

In 1939 he was arrested after the occupation of Galicia by the Soviet Union . In 1940 he was sentenced to ten years in prison and died in prison in 1941.

Teodor Jartschuk was married to Olga Kiss, the daughter of a Protestant deacon. They had a son, Mychajlo.

Adoration

Teodor Jartschuk is venerated as a saint (блаженний) and martyr (мученик) in the Ukrainian Lutheran Church . He is considered a leading theologian of the Ukrainian Reformation of the 20th century or a reformer . His feast day is May 25th .
