Teramaze is an Australian Christian progressive metal band from Melbourne , which was formed in 1993, disbanded in 2006 and has been active again since 2008.

history

The band was formed in 1993 by guitarist Dean Wells as a teenager. There were also singer Brett Rerekura, guitarist Adam Burnell, bassist Matthew Ritchie and drummer Antonio Paulo. In 1995 the debut album Doxology was released . The following year, the group contributed the songs Generation X , Ever Enhancing and Emancipator to the sampler Falling On Deaf Ears - Australian Metal Compilation No. 4 from Rowe Productions . The next album followed in 1998 with Tears to Dust . On this, the singer Clinton Johannes and the guitarist Adam Wilkie can be heard as replacement for Burnell as new members. The EP Not the Criminal was released in 2001 via CMC International , which consists partly of live and partly of studio recordings. In December 2002 the band broke up before Wells revived them in 2006. In mid-2008 the compilation Anthology was published on Jellyfisch Records . A demo was also released in the same year . In 2009 the band started working on the next album with Jeff Waters as producer. In June of that year, drummer Julian Percy had to stop his activity due to heart problems before he passed away on June 15th. Jayson Sherlock was added as a temporary replacement. The album was released in April 2012 under the name Anhedonia on Nightmare Records . Julian Percy can still be heard as a drummer. Then the singer Brett Rerekura, who had left the band in 1997, returned to the line-up. In 2014 the next album followed with Esoteric Symbolism . Then the singer Rerekura left the line-up again and was replaced by Nathan Peachey, while the bassist Luis Enrique Eguren and the keyboardist Dave Holley were added as new members. In December of that year work began on the next album. The album Her Halo was published via Mascot Records in 2015 . Out of Subconscious was released as a single . Participation in ProgPower USA was planned for 2017 , but the group was replaced by Seven Spiers after its cancellation.

style

According to metalmusicarchives.com , the band plays progressive and melodic Thrash Metal . The band itself said that it was influenced by groups like Dream Theater , Tool and Pantera . Singer Brett Rerekura named Layne Staley , Devin Townsend , Sebastian Bach and Maynard James Keenan as main influences, while guitarist Dean Wells was influenced by John Petrucci , Marco Sfogli , Jason Becker and Marty Friedman . Esoteric Symbolism is comparable to the music of Anubis Gate . Brian Giffin described the music as Christian progressive metal in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal. Tears to Dust is quite melodic and resembles song material from Queensrÿche .

Frank Trojan from Rock Hard described the music of Tears to Dust as "great old school heavy metal , brand Pretty Maids , Dio or Leatherwolf ". The group is medium-paced and melodic and relies more on "sophisticated arrangements and well-structured melodies" than on speed. Occasionally, similarities to Hammerfall can be heard. Marcel Rapp from Powermetal.de assigned Anhedonia to Progressive Metal, with elements from Thrash Metal also being present. In addition, the group shows "a lot of sense for instrumental harmony, breaking hardness, meaningful ideas and song structures". In a later rock-hard edition, Michael Rensen reviewed Her Halo and wrote that the music was both semi-modern progressive metal, which focuses on riffs and groove , as well as "epic power metal , neoclassical symphonic - Bombast or Melodic Metal Vocals ”. As far as song structures, soundscapes and technical level of play are concerned, the group could tie in with bands like Shadow Gallery , Dream Theater, Kamelot or Symphony X , but the songs lack their own identity, "despite first-class arrangements, varied chord progressions and flawless vocals". In the atmospheric passages, the group is reminiscent of Vauxdvihl .
