That's the Way (I Like It) is a song that first became known as a hit by the band KC and the Sunshine Band in 1975.

background

That's the Way (I Like It) was written by Harry Wayne Casey (aka KC) and Richard Finch. The title was originally recorded in a version that was unmistakably a dialogue during a sexual act. This was evident primarily through the alternation in the chorus, in which the male voice, which sang the title line (freely translated: “I like it this way”), alternated with the female vocal part; the loud and intense "un-huh" was like a groan. Although Casey was convinced of the hit potential of this version, a scandal because of this daring interpretation seemed foreseeable, so that he defused the song significantly. The published version was far more exuberant, and the previously explicit passages in the chorus now sounded like screams of joy. Many critics, however, saw a sexual allusion even in the amended version, as the text was still ambiguous for them.

I had to cool it down. The "un-huhs" were more like a groaning and moaning and I had to clean that up considerably. It was 1975 and I just thought it was a little too risqué.

“I had to defuse it. The 'un-huhs' looked like groans and groans, I had to clean that up a lot. I thought it was a little too daring for 1975. "

- KC : about the changes to the title

The best way I can explain the song is a 'huge explosion of celebration'.

"For me, the song can best be described as a great mood explosion."

- Richard Finch : about the new version

That's the Way (I Like It) corresponded to the typical Miami sound of the band. The main features of the title were the arrangement of the wind instruments and the female voices in the foreground. The title was characterized by a cheerful and exuberant mood that was ubiquitous, especially during live performances.

success

That's the Way (I Like It) was released as the second single from the band's album KC and the Sunshine Band . The song reached the top of the US charts in November 1975 , which was the band's second number one hit after Get Down Tonight . After the title was ousted from first place after only one week by Fly, Robin, Fly from Silver Convention , three weeks later it made another jump to the top - That's the Way (I Like It) is one of the few titles that belongs to were able to occupy the top position of the US charts at two separate times. In Canada and the Netherlands , the single also took first place, in addition, it reached the top 10 in many other countries. A remix version released by KC and the Sunshine Band in 1991, however, was far less successful; in the British charts she did not get past number 59.

Cover versions

Numerous performers have covered the song or used a sample for their own tracks. The best known are the versions of soul singer Madeline Bell and British new wave group Dead or Alive . The US musician Dino turned to the original version of the title in 1988, but the sexual innuendos were much more direct with him than with the original fourteen years earlier (although he obviously did not mention the two authors). The number, simply titled I Like It , reached number 7 on the US charts, which retrospectively confirmed Casey's view of the possible success of the more scandalous "original version". The cover version of the British dance formation Clock , which made it to number 11 in Great Britain , proved that the title had lost none of its popularity in the 1990s .
