Weezer is the third studio album by the American band of the same name , released in 2001 on Geffen Records . Since the first album already bore the band's name, a distinction was made based on the color of the cover pictures: The first album was referred to as The Blue Album , the third as The Green Album .

This is the first and only album with bassist Mikey Welsh, who replaced Matt Sharp, who left in 1998 to focus more on his side project The Rentals .

All songs on the album were written by singer Rivers Cuomo. In addition to Patrick Wilson, Atom Willard was also involved in the drum recordings .

The B-sides of the singles vary depending on the published format (CD, single LP, cassette) or the country of publication. Another song that was released as the B-side of the Hash Pipe single is Teenage Victory Song . Other B-sides of the Island in the sun single are Sugar Booger and Brightening Day .

Photograph was only available as a CD single in Japan. In some other countries only promo singles went to the radio stations.

Music videos

A video clip with sumo wrestlers was shot for Hash Pipe . Directed by Marcos Siega . Under pressure from MTV , Weezer should rename the song to Half Pipe , as the reference to drugs in the title made the song unusable for American afternoon music television. Ultimately, however, the title was simply changed by censorship asterisks ( H *** Pipe ). The broadcaster nominated the video in 2001 in the Best Rock Video category for the MTV Video Music Awards ; however, the award went to the then popular group Limp Bizkit .

To Iceland in the Sun two videos were filmed; the first, directed by Marcos Siega, like Hash Pipe and some later Weezer videos, shows the band playing at a wedding. Spike Jonze later made the more famous second clip, which shows the band members playing with various animals, including a chimpanzee , a giraffe and a bear . This video lacks bassist Mickey Welsh, who was no longer a member of the band at the time of shooting.

reception

The album was received mostly benevolently among music critics. In the American Rolling Stone it was rated 4 out of 5 stars, in the All Music Guide it received 4.5 out of 5 stars and the reviewer attested a return to the debut album. The New Musical Express and Pitchfork Media found the work to be less recommendable .
