The Lodge is an American-British fictional film from 2019 by the Austrian directing duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala . The premiere took place on January 25, 2019 as part of the Sundance Film Festival 2019 , where the film was shown in the Midnight section. In Germany the film was released on February 6, 2020, in Austria one day later.

action

The two siblings Aidan and Mia are opposed to Grace, their father Richard's new friend. After various attempts to change this failed, Richard insists on a trip together with the children and their soon-to-be stepmother to the family lodge, which is in a remote location. While Richard is called back to work, Grace and the children are snowed in and have to wait there together.

This would actually be a good opportunity for Grace to get to know Aidan and Mia better, but the two show no real interest in it. As they slowly thaw out, eerie incidents occur that threaten to bring back demons hidden deep inside the woman and trigger something evil that has its origins in her strictly religious childhood. Grace was raised in a religious cult led by her father and is the sole survivor of a mass suicide.

synchronization

The German dubbing was carried out by the Berlin TaunusFilm Synchron GmbH . Marc Boettcher directed the dialogue .

production

After Ich seh Ich seh this is the second feature film by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala.

The premiere took place on January 25, 2019 as part of the Sundance Film Festival 2019 . On June 2, 2019, it was the final film of the Overlook Film Festival. In July 2019 the film was shown at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival , at the Fantasy Filmfest 2019 and at the 10th Vienna / slash Film Festival it was shown as the opening film.

reception

Mathis Raabe found in the Weser Kurier that Franz and Fiala, unlike their debut Ich seh Ich seh here and there, would rely on conventional horror tropes such as dollhouses and jump scares . Nevertheless, they have succeeded in making a film that creates a strong sense of unease without clearly identifying its threat. As with Ich Seh Ich seh , the visually powerful finale left tumults in the pit of the stomach long after leaving the cinema.
