The real Ivan

The lowland gorilla Ivan in the B&I Circus store in Tacoma

Applegate's novel is inspired by the life of the western lowland gorilla Ivan (pronounced "Eye-van"). He was born in 1962 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. He was malnourished and weak at delivery. When Ivan was two years old, the zookeeper Ruben Johnston took him home and raised him there for the next three years, supported by his wife Lois and their sons Danny and Larry. He was later moved to the B&I Circus Store in Tacoma, where he was the only gorilla and, unlike in the film, did not have as much contact with the other animals. The store's owner, Earl Irwin, exhibited a variety of animals over the years, including flamingos, a baby elephant named Sammy, a lion, a seal, a pair of chimpanzees, a chicken, and a rabbit. Ivan lived in his concrete and steel enclosure in the B&I Circus Store for 27 years until he was donated to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle by the Irwin family for his release in 1994 after the efforts of animal welfare organizations. Shortly afterwards he was on permanent loan to the Atlanta Zoo in Georgia, where he spent the last 18 years of his life, in the Ford African Rain Forest, an enclosure with grass and trees. Here Ivan met other gorillas for the first time in 30 years.

On August 21, 2012, 50-year-old Ivan died while under anesthesia during a medical examination. The autopsy found a large tumor in his chest. Ivan was one of the oldest gorillas in captivity when he died. The Atlanta Zoo complied with Ivan's original owners' request to have his remains cremated and returned to Tacoma. On October 26, 2016, a 270 kg bronze statue of Ivan was unveiled in front of the main entrance to Point Defiance Zoo.
