Life

Theodor Bernhard Rehmann was born on February 9, 1895 in Essen to parents from the Lower Rhine region. After participating in the First World War , he studied theology in Münster and Bonn and musicology with Ludwig Schiedermair . On 18 February 1923 he received the Cologne Cathedral , the ordination . After brief pastoral care as a chaplain in Düsseldorf-Wersten , he continued his church music studies in Regensburg and Munich and passed the final exam with Eberhard Schwickerath . In 1925 he became collegiate vicar and collegiate bandmaster at Aachen Cathedral and in 1945/46 provisional music director of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra . With the re-establishment of the diocese of Aachen in 1930, Rehmann became cathedral music director . He held this office until his death in 1963.

Act

As cathedral music director, Rehmann freed church music practice at Aachen Cathedral from the narrow limits of Cecilianism , to which his important predecessor Franz Nekes (1844–1914) felt obliged as a composer and church musician, and led the contemporary repertoire of the Munich ( Joseph Haas ) and Cologne ( Heinrich Lemacher ) church music schools in Aachen Cathedral Music. Through concert tours and partnerships, he expanded the sphere of activity of the Aachen Cathedral Choir internationally. He developed a special relationship with the contemporary Flemish music scene and cultivated the oeuvre of the composers Hendrik Andriessen (1892–1981), Flor Peeters (1903–1986), Arthur Meulemanns (1884–1966) and Julius van Nuffel (1883–1953), who themselves were often guests in Aachen.

After the horrors of the Second World War, Rehmann's endeavors to promote artistic encounters between Western European musicians led to the revival of the Niederrheinische Musikfest in Aachen in 1946 and the establishment of the Eifeler Musikfest in the same year in Steinfeld / Eifel Monastery , of which Rehmann was artistic director until his death .

Offices and honors

In 1944, Rehmann became the canon of honor at the High Cathedral in Aachen and a real clergyman , and in 1958 he was resident of the cathedral chapter . In 1948 he was appointed papal house prelate by the pope . Rehmann was Diozesanpräses of the General German Cecilia Association , honorary member of the Royal Flemish Academy in Brussels, member of the German section of the International Music Council of UNESCO , honorary member of the Bruckner Society , member of the German Music Council and President of the Working Group of German Choral Associations .
