Theodor Hagen (composer)

Theodor Hagen (born April 15, 1823 in Hamburg , † December 21, 1871 in New York ), pseudonym Joachim Fels , was a German composer , music critic, tutor, poet and member of the Communist League .

Life

Theodor Hagen did a commercial apprenticeship in Hamburg from 1838 to 1840. He then began to study music, which he continued in Paris in 1841. He became acquainted with Heinrich Heine , Richard Wagner and Friedrich Hebbel and corresponded with Ludmilla Assing from 1842 to 1844 . Hagen wrote for the magazine Telegraph for Germany and the Hamburg seasons, edited by Georg Schirges . After his return to Hamburg, Hagen headed the Städtisches Theater Hamburg as "theater secretary". During the revolution of 1848/1849 he was active in the Hamburg workers' education association and in the democratic district committee of his hometown. He took part in the second Democrats' Congress in Berlin (October 26 to October 30, 1848) and in early May 1849 in Frankfurt. On December 14, 1848, Hagen was elected to the Hamburg Constituent Assembly. When Karl Marx visited Hamburg in the spring of 1849, he met Theodor Hagen. Communist League member Conrad Schramm was traveling with his passport in 1849 when he was arrested. At the beginning of November 1849, Theodor Hagen negotiated on behalf of Karl Marx with the Hamburg publisher Julius Schuberth about the publication of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung. Political-economic review . Hagen also managed to get a printer. Hagen was the proofreader of this magazine. In 1850 Hagen emigrated to London , where he earned his living as a music teacher and journalist. In 1854 he emigrated to the USA and settled in New York. Here he worked as a music teacher and music critic. He wrote about German composers and also composed some songs. As editor of The Musical review and musical world , he was widely recognized. Theodor Hagen succumbed to heart disease on December 27, 1871.
